I did not know Ted well. Again, our high school interaction may have been limited to gym class. A couple of years after high school, however, I was surprised to see Ted arrive in the ER at Memorial Hospital. He had been in a significant car accident and suffered a broken neck resulting in quadriplegia. After significant hospitalization and specialized rehab, Ted spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Occasionally, following his discharge for his initial (paralyzing) injury, I would see Ted when he came to Memorial for "short-stay" treatments of nagging/recurrent infections. Ted passed away in 1983.
I got interested in photography in Jr. Hi. Ted and I talked about it and he invited me to his house where he had a darkroom. He taught me all the basics of film (remember that stuff) developing and printing. I turned the backroom on King St. into my own darkroom and away I went. Beleve it or not every so often when I take photos I think of Ted and how he helped me get started way back then. Ted was a find young man and very giving of his time. That's my Kodak moment of our friend Ted Ulberg.
